Valley Crossing draws No. 2 post

Valley Crossing drew the No. 2 post position yesterday for Saturday's $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar.

The Maryland-bred horse, who worked a mile in 1 minute, 37 seconds at Pimlico Race Course on Monday before flying to California, shipped well and is handling the track fine, trainer Dick Small said yesterday.

Best Pal, listed as the heavy 4-5 favorite, starts from the extreme outside post in the field of seven horses, all Grade I stakes winners. Expected pacesetter, Bertrando, drew the rail.

Bertrando is part of a three-horse entry saddled by Bobby Frankel, the nation's leading trainer. Frankel's entry is listed as the second choice at 9-5 odds and also includes Marquetry and Missionary Ridge.

Frankel said that Marquetry's running style will be altered. "He runs his best races on the lead, but in this case, he will lay right off Bertrando," Frankel said. "If Bertrando can't last the 1 1/4 miles, then Marquetry should be there to pass him."

There will be five betting interests in the Pacific Classic. Siberian Summer is the third choice at 4-1 odds, followed by Valley Crossing at 8-1 and Pistols and Roses the extreme outsider at 15-1.

Pimlico clockers described Valley Crossing's Monday workout at Pimlico as "a Secretariat-like" move. The horse worked the first half of a mile in 49 seconds, then the second half in a speedier 48 seconds, finishing the

last eighth of a mile in 12.3 seconds. He galloped out nine furlongs in 1:49 4/5.

Valley Crossing's jockey is Chris Antley, who has never competed at Del Mar.

All starters carry 124 pounds.
