NASCAR -- Announced that carburetor restrictor plates, previously used only in races at tracks in Talladega, Ala., and Daytona Beach, Fla., will be used in Charlotte, N.C., on Oct. 10 and in Atlanta on Nov. 14.


Orioles -- Sent P Jason Satre from Triple-A Rochester to Double-A Bowie. Sent P Mark Smith from Single-A Frederick to Bowie.

Cincinnati Reds -- Optioned 1B-OF Tommy Gregg to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Oakland Athletics -- Placed IF Lance Blankenship on the 15-day DL. Purchased the contract of P Steve Karsay from Triple-A Tacoma.

St. Louis Cardinals -- Placed P Rheal Cormier on the 15-day DL. Recalled P Tom Urbani from Triple-A Louisville.

Texas Rangers -- Activated P Charlie Leibrandt from the DL. Optioned P Jeff Bronkey to Triple-A Oklahoma City.


Atlanta Hawks -- Signed F Doug Edwards, a first-round draft choice, to a multi-year contract.

Panionios (Greek Basketball League) -- Signed C Ed Stokes, the Miami Heat's only pick in the NBA draft (35th overall).


NCAA -- Placed Auburn's football program on two years' probation and banned it from postseason play, the conference championships and playing on television for one year, and limited athletic scholarships for rules violations. Approved the reclassification of Cal Poly-SLO from a Division II athletic program to Division I-AA, effective September 1994.

Canisius -- Named Mark Warner, Fred Roberts, Steve Yovetich and John Socha assistant football coaches.

Case Western -- Named Kristin M. Hughes women's basketball coach.

Cincinnati -- Dismissed WR Marlon Pearce (56 receptions for 891 yards last season) from the football team for rules violations.

Pace -- Named Jim Harter men's assistant basketball coach.

Pittsburgh -- Placed starting OT Reuben Brown on probation for an altercation at an off-campus hot dog shop.

St. Francis, Pa. -- Named Sherri Fulton women's assistant basketball coach.

South Dakota -- Named Nick Nurse men's assistant basketball coach.

Southern Illinois -- Named Joseph Simmons assistant football coach.

Susquehanna -- Named Jodi Bell women's lacrosse coach.

Virginia Tech -- Signed women's basketball coach Carol Alfano to a four-year contract.


Atlanta Falcons -- Waived DL Frank Gianetti.

Cleveland Browns -- Signed PK Roman Anderson.

Houston Oilers -- Wavied DE Eric Miller.

Los Angeles Rams -- Released C Kelvin Harris.

Philadelphia Eagles -- Signed WR Mark Duper and WR Orlando McKay. Waived OL Mike Heller and WR Fred Montgomery.

San Francisco 49ers -- Waived C Gregg Rakoczy.

Seattle Seahawks -- Agreed to terms with T Cortez Kennedy on a four-year contract extension through 1998.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- Waived PK Tracy Bennett.


Calgary Flames -- Signed free-agent C Kelly Kisio (26 goals, 52 assists last season with the San Jose Sharks) to a multi-year contract.

New York Islanders -- Named Bob Froese goaltending coach.

New York Rangers -- Signed D Doug Lidster.

San Jose Sharks -- Signed C Jamie Baker.

Washington Capitals -- Signed D Shawn Anderson, G Byron Dafoe and RW Martin Gendron.
