'Suicide' remark sparks hour-long search

Maryland State Police, a helicopter from Frederick and three dog-handler teams searched woods along Lawndale and Tank roads for a man who mentioned suicide to a cab driver before being dropped off there about 1 p.m. yesterday.

The 45-year-old Westminster area man was found sitting beside a stream off Tank Road after a one-hour search. He appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and was taken to Carroll County General Hospital for an evaluation, police said.

The man was spotted by the helicopter crew, who directed ground teams to a bridge over the West Branch of the Patapsco River.

The search began when a cab driver told police that a passenger rode from Westminster to Lawndale Road and mentioned suicide during the trip.

A ground-breaking ceremony for Central Maryland Farm Credit's new Carroll County office will be at 9 a.m. Aug. 26, on the Carroll County Air Business Center site at the end of Aileron Court.

The bank, which primarily lends money to farmers, is moving its headquarters from Frederick to Carroll County. Employees from the county branch in the Air Business Center's Basically Computers building will also move to the new facility.

Farm Credit and Design Enterprises, a 10-year-old Carroll County machine shop, are the first two businesses to move into the second phase of the Air Business Center.

Bank officials expect to finish construction on the 3.8-acre site by March.
