Route 140 crash victim in serious condition

A 71-year-old Baltimore woman injured in a car accident at Route 140 and Bethel Road Thursday afternoon was listed in serious but stable condition Friday at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

Inez Margaret Bull of the 1600 block of Waverly Way drove into the path of a 1992 Ford Econoline 250 van as she tried to cross Route 140 from the north side of Bethel Road.

She was driving a 1988 Oldsmobile Firenza.

The five men in the van were not seriously injured.

Union Mills resident disputes airstrip plan

A Kowomu Trail resident said he will ask the Carroll commissioners to reconsider their decision to build a model plane airstrip at a Union Mills farm for the Westminster AeroModelers Club.

Ronald R. Frederick said Commissioner Elmer C. Lippy based his vote to move the airstrip from the John Owings Landfill to the Spiegel farm on faulty information.

Last week, the commissioners voted 2-1 to move the airstrip to the farm, which is near Kowomu Trail and Rinehart Road. Mr. Lippy said he voted for the move because fewer residents would be disturbed by noise from the planes. There are fewer homes near the Spiegel farm than the landfill, he said.

AeroModelers members will fly radio-controlled planes at the strip.

Mr. Frederick said he spent five hours on foot counting houses in the Spiegel farm neighborhood. He found more homes near the farm and fewer near the landfill than Mr. Lippy's maps showed, he said.
