Name: Gail Reed, a resident of Allview Estates for 36 years.

Hobbies/Activities: Mrs. Reed is a volunteer care giver at Hospice Services of Howard County. She also plays bridge, swims every day at Howard Community College and exercises. She also enjoys spending time with her five grandchildren.

Organization's Comments: Mrs. Reed has volunteered at the hTC hospice for 2 1/2 years, including participation in the training program. She also volunteers in the hospice office, doing filing, working with clients' charts and whatever needs to be done.

"Gail is a dedicated volunteer," said Elaine Patico, Director of Support Services at the Hospice Services of Howard County. "She has stuck by patients when their illnesses went on for a year. Generally clients have six months or less to live. She is a very faithful care giver and is very creative in her help to families."

Volunteer's Comments: "I do whatever is necessary for the client. Often my job has been respite care. I stay with the client so the primary care giver can get out to run errands or whatever. I have taken clients shopping, done housework and often just sat and talked with clients."

Mrs. Reed, a retired nurse, said she wanted to do volunteer work related to the medical profession.

"When I work with clients, it gives me a very satisfying feeling to provide support for the client and family. It is a good feeling working with the people. And I enjoy very much working with the staff, they are very caring professionals. I believe in the hospice philosophy, of enhancing the quality of life for people who are dying. And, to do what I can to help keep them at home if that is what they want.

"The hospice isn't just being a care giver. You can volunteer in many ways. I have a neighbor who gives time on the computer, and my son has done electrical work on a volunteer basis."

Volunteers always are needed at the hospice. For more information, call 730-5072.
