Around the house

* Open clogged drains. Pour 1 cup salt and 1 cup baking soda into drain. Carefully flush with a kettle of boiling water.

* Avoid smears in bathroom sink. Keep a hand towel in the sink bowl while using toiletries such as talcum or powderered cosmetics. Towel can be shaken out into wastebasket and sink will remain shiny, clean.

* Vacuum fringes of delicate rugs carefully. Use a light suction and the upholstery tool or a hand-held vacuum.

* When going on vacation, remember to stop delivery of the newspapers and your mail; set automatic timers for lights, radios, TVs; lock all doors and windows and hide empty trash containers.

* Preserve wood furniture. Keep chairs and tables out of direct sunlight. If possible, move pieces such as buffets and hutches away from heating and cooling ducts which may dry out the wood. Dust frequently.

In the garden

* Repel cats that use your garden as a litter box. Scatter orange or lemon peels among shrubs and flowers.
