Rockets end in top 16 at Ohio tourney

The Westminster Rockets 14-and-under softball team recently finished in the top 16 of the 56-team American Softball Association National Tournament in Toledo, Ohio.

The 3-2 finish by the Rockets was the best in the 25 years the team has competed in the tournament.

Highlights included a 10-5 win over the Tri-County Slammers, an Ohio-based team, in the Rockets' second game. Trailing 5-0 in the middle of the second, the Rockets

scored 10 unanswered runs, capped by a four-run fourth to go 2-0 in the tournament. Their first win came via a forfeit.

Ashlee Van Doren went 2-for-3 in the 10-5 win with two RBI. Jenny Hoff also was 2-for-3 and scored the winning run.

Following a 15-3 loss to the Willowby Stars (Ohio), the Rockets rebounded with a 6-1 win over the B.J. Bears (Kentucky). Brittney Georgiana pitched a four-hitter, while Courtney Wunderlich went 2-for-2.

The Rockets lost an 8-7 extra-inning contest to Blue Angel (Texas) in their last game despite a 3-for-4 effort from Heather Almony.

Other team members were Lauren Henry, Katie Curtin, Chrissy Charlton, Alicia Guseman, Sindy Stem, Vallie Lewis. Kim Frame and Christine Hartle couldn't make the trip. Jerry Georgiana managed the Rockets with the help of Ed Henry and Stu Curtin.
