Santos lashes Krone after Saratoga bumps

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Star of Cozzene went after Furiously in the stretch run of the Bernard Baruch Handicap. Jose Santos only wanted to go after Julie Krone.

There were winners, losers and angry jockeys yesterday at Saratoga.

Furiously, undefeated in three starts on the turf, upset Star of Cozzene by a length in the nine-furlong Baruch to earn revenge for stablemate Lure, who has lost two straight to his rival.

In doing so, he may have had an assist from the Krone-ridden Royal Mountain Inn, who had Star of Cozzene and Santos in tight quarters through much of the stretch run and appeared to bump with him several times. Once free in deep stretch, Star of Cozzene did not have enough time to catch Furiously.

After the race, Santos wanted it to be known that he was not pleased with Krone.

"From the quarter-pole in, Julie was on top of me," Santos said. "That's happened before in claiming races, but these horses have values like $3 million. He [Star of Cozzene] was trying hard, but Julie didn't let me out.

"[Trainer] Mark Hennig said that if I punched her and they fined me, he'll pay half the fine. Julie was racing against me."

When asked if he felt like hitting Krone, Santos replied: "If she were a man, I would have."

Krone pleaded innocent.

"I kept a perfectly straight course and was trying to save some ground on the turn," she said. "I just rode to win on my horse. It's unfortunate he was boxed in. It's a frustrating thing; it's happened to me."
