Baltimore man hurt in fall from cliff while climbing in Patapsco Valley park

A Baltimore man rock climbing alone yesterday in Patapsco Valley State Park plummeted 30 to 50 feet to the base of an 80-foot cliff, narrowly escaping serious injury or death, county fire and rescue officials said.

Mike Parks, 22, of the 500 block of Doris Ave. in Brooklyn was being evaluated at Howard County General Hospital, where he was treated for numerous bruises and lacerations.

The Special Incident Response Team, a division of the county Department of Fire and Rescue Services, took about an hour, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., to locate Mr. Parks, stabilize him and pull his bruised body by rope to the top of the cliff, said Battalion Chief Donald Howell.

When rescuers located Mr. Parks in the rocky area south of Ellicott City, he was conscious and coherent, but had been cut and bruised over his entire body, Chief Howell said.
