American League -- Suspended Chicago White Sox 3B Robin Ventura for two games for charging the mound and fighting Texas Rangers P Nolan Ryan during an Aug. 4 game; announced that Ventura has appealed the suspension.

National League -- Announced Colorado 3B Charlie Hayes has withdrawn his appeal of a three-game suspension.

Orioles -- Placed OF Jeffrey Hammonds on the 15-day DL with a herniated disk, retroactive to Aug. 3; recalled OF Damon Buford from Triple-A Rochester.

Boston Red Sox -- Recalled IF Tim Naehring from an injury-rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket; optioned IF Ernest Riles to Pawtucket.

Detroit Tigers -- Placed P David Wells on the 15-day DL with an inflamed left elbow, retroactive to Aug. 1; recalled P Greg Gohr from Triple-A Toledo.

Milwaukee Brewers -- Placed OF Tom Brunansky on the 15-day disabled list with a lower-back strain; recalled OF Troy O'Leary from Triple-A New Orleans; announced IF William Suero elected to take free agency after being designated for assignment July 29.

Montreal Expos -- Signed free-agent IF Randy Ready; optioned IF Frank Bolick to Triple-A Ottawa and designated P Cliff Brantley for assignment.

New York Mets -- Announced that P Bret Saberhagen will be suspended an unspecified amount of games upon his return from the disabled list for a clubhouse bleach-spraying incident; announced that they will purchase the contract of P Bobby Jones from Triple-A Norfolk and officially placed Saberhagen on the disabled list.

Philadelphia Phillies -- Acquired P Bobby Thigpen and cash considerations from the Chicago White Sox for P Jose DeLeon.

Seattle Mariners -- Acquired P Steve Ontiveros from the Minnesota Twins for OF Greg Shockey. Placed P Brad Holman on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Aug. 9. Transferred P Norm Charlton to the 60-day DL.

Toronto Blue Jays -- Signed P Chris Carpenter, their first-round pick in the 1993 free-agent draft.

USA Basketball -- Named Don Chaney, Pete Gillen, and Rick Majerus assistant coaches for the 1994 World Championship team.

Colgate -- Named Darren Rizzi tight ends coach and Stacie Kleinhen assistant athletic trainer.

Dartmouth -- Named Judy Parish women's assistant ice hockey coach and Mike Cavanaugh men's assistant ice hockey coach.
