An 8-year-old girl was killed during a domestic dispute yesterday in Cecil County when a man shot a woman and the slug passed through the woman's body and hit the child in the head.

When state police arrived at the home in the 200 block of Hopewell Road in Rising Sun at 12:55 p.m., they found Kimberly Michelle Rice dead and Karen Poe, 27, wounded in the stomach, state police spokesman Mike McKelvin said.

Mrs. Poe was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore where she was in critical condition last night, the spokesman said.

Mrs. Poe's husband, James Allen Poe, 29, was being held last night by Pennsylvania state police, Mr. McKelvin said. He has been charged in warrants with first-degree murder and assault with intent murder and was to be returned today to Cecil County.

According to police, Mr. Poe arrived about 12:45 p.m. at the Hopewell Road address where his estranged wife lives with her boyfriend, Dwayne Rice, and Mr. Rice's children, including Kimberly.

Mr. Poe and his wife began arguing when she refused to let him see their children, police said. Mr. Poe then went to his car and returned with a single-barrel shotgun.

He fired one shot that went through Mrs. Poe's stomach and hit Kimberly in the head, police said.

Five other children and another adult were in the home, police said. Neighbors said they heard gunfire and called police as Mr. Poe got into his car and drove off.

He was picked up a short time later by Pennsylvania state troopers, Mr. McKelvin said.
