Westminster races usually end with plenty of Huggs

August 10, 1993|By Michael Reeb | Michael Reeb,Staff Writer

When the Hugg family runs in one of the Westminster Road Runners Club races, the tightly knit running community of 75 becomes even more of a family affair.

That's because where there is one Hugg, there usually are three -- and sometimes four. Bob, who is 40 and one of the club's most successful masters runners, and daughters Shannon, 16, and Kim, 15, generally are an entry in WRRC events.

Says Bob: "Most of the times I run, they run with me."

When the distance is right, mom will join in the fun.

"Usually, for 5Ks and below, she'll try to run," Bob says of his wife, Sandy.

There is some dispute about how the family outings got started, depending upon whom you talk with.

According to Bob: "What started was Shannon began running the end of her sophomore year. That sort of inspired me. I used to run in high school, but it was like a 22-year lapse. I would say it was Shannon who started it all for me again."

According to Kim: "Dad ran cross country and track when he was in high school. He's like our hero."

Motivation aside, what matters is that the family is clocking some fast times.

Last November, Bob finished second in the Otterdale Mill 5-Mile Run at Taneytown in 28 minutes, 29 seconds, Shannon was the top female finisher in 36:05, and Kim placed second in 38:37.

"We had a streak going," says Bob. "At Otterdale Mill, we all walked away with a prize. Right after that, we ran the Frozen Finger and all three of us walked away with prizes. After that, we ran the Mighty Medford 5K in January. That's when I got my first masters win."

And you thought the Rosascos had a hold on familial finishes.

Shannon and Kim are standout cross country and track runners at Francis Scott Key High in Carroll County, the same school for which their father ran. Shannon set a school record in the 3,200-meter run this spring with a time of 12:40.

When the occasion permits, the sisters will venture onto Westminster's roads for a WRRC race. Most of the time, they will be accompanied by their father.

"I run over half of them [WRRC races]," says Kim, a sophomore xTC Francis Scott Key. "Usually, I'm behind them [Bob and Shannon] somewhat."
