A new program to fund arts education in the schools, developed by the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, the PHOENIX Repertory Dance Company and the Morton and Sophia Macht Foundation, will introduce elementary- and middle-school children to the art of dance.
A grant of $7,100 from the Macht Foundation will enable PHOENIX to take professional dancers into six schools in southwest Baltimore this fall for assemblies and participatory sessions. It will also fund dance workshops for children at UMBC.
PHOENIX, under the artistic direction of Carol Hess, is the resident professional dance company at UMBC. The Macht Foundation is a private family foundation with a particular interest in programs in the Baltimore metropolitan area.
The participating schools are Beechfield Elementary and West Baltimore Middle schools in Baltimore and Arbutus Elementary, Arbutus Middle, Johnnycake Elementary and Johnnycake Middle schools in Baltimore County.
The annual Annapolis Art Walk, sponsored by the city's art galleries, will run from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 12. Galleries will contain new art exhibits and feature artists demonstrating their techniques with paintings, woodworking, sculpture and jewelry making.
