Around the house

* Protect soft luggage when storing. Fold compactly and store in plastic bags on closet shelf or under bed.

* When moving heavy appliances, rub the floor with a bar of soap so that the stove or refrigerator will slide easily. Be sure to remove the soap when finished.

* Spruce up sagging, cotton ruffles on pillow shams. Spray with hair spray.

* Clean dirty marble with a damp cloth or sponge that has been dipped in dry borax; rub off stubborn stains; rinse with warm water and buff dry.

* Remove water spots quickly from wood dining table. Smear a thin layer of mayonnaise over tabletop and use fingers to rub into stains; let sit; remove residue with a damp, soft cloth; buff with a dry, soft cloth.

* If you're too impatient to wait for suds to drain, sprinkle salt onto the bubbles.

In the garden

* Avoid powdery mildew on plants. Do not water from overhead; remove old leaves and debris and, if possible, keep in ventilated area. Trapped air beneath porches and awnings promotes disease in hanging baskets and other plants.
