WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Dennis Winters, from Eisenhower Golf Course in Crownsville, won the 45th annual Taylor Made/Middle Atlantic PGA Assistants' championship yesterday, completing a weather-suspended round of 68 for a 36-hole total of 138 at the Country Club of Ford's Colony.

In capturing his first major Middle Atlantic PGA championship, Winters topped a field of 195, and earned $4,500 from the $30,000 purse. Additionally, he gained an automatic berth in the National PGA Assistants' championship, scheduled for Dec. 14-17 at PGA West, in La Quinta, Calif.

Kevin South, of the Dominion Club in Glen Allen, Va., was second at 71-70141, followed by a four-way tie at 142 that included Baltimorean Tom Gross, of TPC-Avenel.

The leaders were among 24 players who were on the course when play was suspended Tuesday and had to return yesterday to finish their rounds. When play was halted, Winters, the first-round leader over the 6,755-yard layout, held a two-stroke lead on Gross, with three holes to play.

Winters, whose best previous showing in a major event had been a second in the Maryland Open two years ago, cited superb putting as the key to his 6-under-par triumph. He had one bogey for the two rounds.
