YMCA has swim team and swimming lessons

The Carroll County Family YMCA is offering a two-week session of swimming lessons starting Aug. 16 at the Westminster facility on Washington Road.

Classes for children and adults are available Monday through Friday.

The YMCA's winter swim season for the Piranhas team is approaching. Registration is being accepted for members returning from last year.

New member registration will begin Aug. 16. Openings are limited and available on a first come, first served basis.

The swim team offers a positive, competitive experience for children 6 to 18. All swimmers must have a working knowledge of freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke.

Haines to defend Senate seat in 1994

Sen. Larry Haines announced his intention to defend his Senate seat in the 1994 election at the annual picnic sponsored by Friends of Larry E. Haines.

Speaking to almost 1,000 supporters who attended the picnic July 24, Sen. Haines reaffirmed his commitment of "People Before Politics" and promised to continue to vote only for responsible legislation that is in the best interest of all Carroll countians.

Several state and local officials attended the picnic, as well as gubernatorial hopefuls Del. Ellen Sauerbrey, R-10th, the House Minority leader, and Bill Shepherd, plus U.S. Senate candidate Ron Franks. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett also addressed the

crowd.

There was plenty of food, fun and entertainment along with the politicking.

"People are fed up with unnecessary taxes and regulation and are overburdened," Sen. Haines said. He challenged his supporters to elect credible, qualified candidates in 1994 who are fiscally and morally responsible.

Model truck contest slated at hobby store

Bobby's Hobby Lobby will have a model truck contest Aug. 9-20 at the store, 65 E. Main St., Westminster.

First- through third-place prizes will be awarded in three age groups: junior, up to 12 years; senior, 13-17 years; and adult, 18 and up.

No purchase is necessary. Entry is required by completing an entry form when the finished model (pickup, van or tractor-trailer) is brought in.

Judging will be based on assembly, craftsmanship, paint, interior quality, chassis, engine and overall detail, realism, functional features and overall impression.

Winning models will be on display in the store through Aug. 28.

Colonial Pipeline Co. gives to Bear Branch

As part of its observation of Earth Year 1993, the employees of Colonial Pipeline Co. at Dorsey Junction have made a $1,200 donation to the Hashawha/Bear Branch Advisory Council to help pay for the dedication and grand opening of the Bear Branch Nature Center May 15.

Bear Branch is a 7,000-square-foot facility on a hilltop surrounded by 320 acres of Hashawha property and the Union Mills watershed.

The nature center features a large exhibit hall, discovery room, library/resource room, bird observation room, auditorium, a 20- foot diameter planetarium, staff offices, workroom and staff and volunteer kitchen.

The conservation kitchen is a learning center for teaching smart shopping skills as well as how to manage a kitchen in an earth- friendly way.

Based in Atlanta, Ga., Colonial Pipeline supports Earth Year by making donations to local environmental organizations in its marketing areas. Decisions about the organizations and activities to receive the grants are made by local employees.

Colonial operates a large breakout tank farm near Westminster that delivers gasoline, kerosene and diesel fuel to local marketers.
