Stove fire damages Sykesville apartment

A stove fire in an apartment on Village Road in Sykesville was extinguished before it could spread throughout the kitchen Monday afternoon, Emergency Operations Center officials reported.

County firefighters from Sykesville, Gamber and Winfield were joined by others from West Friendship of Howard County and Liberty Road of Baltimore County at the 2 p.m. fire. Units were out of service for one hour while the volunteers checked kitchen cabinets and the walls behind the stove for any extension of the fire, the emergency center reported.

Fire damage was confined to the stove and the bottom of the cabinet directly over the range. There was also smoke damage to the kitchen.

POLICE

* Sykesville: Police believe a Molotov cocktail was used to destroy a mailbox in the 500 block of River Road the night of July 19 or the morning of July 20. The owner of the residence found a shattered beer bottle in the box, which was valued at $100, police said.

FIRE

* Gamber: Gamber was dispatched for wires on fire on Sykesville Road at 9:47 p.m. Monday. Units were out for 15 minutes.

* Sykesville: Sykesville responded for a fire alarm sounding in a building on Mineral Hill Road at 6:57 p.m. Monday. Units were out for 25 min utes.
