Hearing set on mixed use for Superblock

The County Council has scheduled a public hearing Aug. 16 on a bill to change the Glen Burnie Urban Renewal plan to allow a mixed-use development that includes housing on the Superblock.

The bill was introduced Monday night. Changing the development plan for the district is considered the last hurdle the county faces in issuing an invitation to developers to suggest projects for the site.

In the two decades that the county-owned block between Ritchie and Crain highways at Baltimore and Annapolis Boulevard has been offered to developers, none has come forward to build the county's dream of a parking garage, office and shopping complex.

In the past two years, developers have said the only way to attract a builder would be to permit housing.

The meeting is to begin at 7:30 p.m. in council chambers in Annapolis.
