Oakland Mills man, 20, faces attempted murder charge

Howard County police charged a 20-year-old Oakland Mills man with attempted murder over the weekend after he allegedly beat his mother's former boyfriend with a hammer.

DeAngelo Rollins Moody of the 9400 block of Timesweep Lane was charged with assault with intent to commit murder and assault and battery, police said. He was released on his own recognizance, a court commissioner said.

Mr. Moody was arrested about 2 a.m. Saturday in front of his home after officers responded to a call about a fight, police said.

Officers said they found two men fighting at Timesweep Lane and Thunder Hill Road.

Michael Anthony Smith, 31, of the 5200 block of Rivendell Lane in Harper's Choice was taken by ambulance to Howard County General Hospital, where he was treated and released.

Police said Mr. Smith pulled up in front of the Moody residence to see Mr. Moody's mother and began arguing with Mr. Moody. Mr. Moody, armed with a hammer, ordered Mr. Smith off his family's property and the two men began to fight, police said. Police said Mr. Moody told them that Mr. Smith had threatened him and that he was defending himself.
