Two students receive Brethren church awards

The Union Bridge Church of the Brethren recently presented two area college students with the Joanne Grossnickle Scholarship.

The grant was established in 1985 in honor of Joanne Grossnickle, who was an active member of the church in her youth.

Connie B. Roderuck and Brad J. Schott each received $600.

Mrs. Roderuck graduated from Walkersville High School in 1984, but put off going to college while she helped her husband start a dairy farm and raised their son, Andrew.

She enrolled in a sign language class at Western Maryland College, then transferred to Hood College, where she is studying elementary education. She belongs to Phi Theta Kappa international honor society.

Mr. Schott, a 1992 Francis Scott Key High School graduate, majored in agriculture and horticulture. He raises and dries flowers, and sells them at a farmer's market near Washington. At the University of Maryland, he is studying horticulture and hopes to build up his own business after graduation.
