Meetings with lawmakers scheduled

The West County Chamber of Commerce plans to meet this month and next with several state lawmakers from District 33.

Marcia Hall, the chamber's executive director, said the meetings will cover topics from taxes to voting records to the agenda for the next legislative session.

Much of the discussion will center on the health reform bill passed in the last session.

The bill was designed to make health insurance more available to employees of small companies and set up a powerful new panel with the authority to regulate physician fees and services. Businesses, labor groups, insurance companies and a host of health care providers spent more than $1 million lobbying different aspects of the bill.

Ms. Hall said the chamber supported the bill after it was amended, but now wants more information on how it will affect businesses.

The first meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 12 with Del. John G. Gary, a Millersville Republican. The meeting begins at 8 a.m. in Rick's Cafe in the Odenton Shopping Center on Route 175. Future meetings are scheduled for Aug. 25 with Del. Marsha G. Perry, a Crofton Democrat, and Del. Elizabeth S. Smith, a Davidsonville Republican.
