Bus service offered to day care location

Howard County schools are offering "space available" bus service for students who would normally walk to school if their day care provider or baby sitter resides in an area that qualifies for bus transportation.

Officials of the school system's Pupil Transportation Office say parents who use the service "need to be aware of the possibility of loss of the services on very short notice if bus seating space is filled by students meeting eligibility requirements."

Applications for "space available" bus service can be obtained from county elementary schools and the Pupil Transportation Office at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108 in Ellicott City.

Board of Education meeting is canceled

The Howard County Board of Education meeting scheduled for Aug. 12 has been canceled.

Applications available for service academies

Howard County students interested in attending one of the four U.S. service academies in 1994 can receive a nomination application by writing the office of Sen. Paul Sarbanes at 1518 Fallon Federal Office Building, Baltimore, Md. 21201.

The military colleges are the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., the Naval Academy in Annapolis and the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.

Qualified applicants must be U.S. citizens residing in Maryland; at least 17-years-old but not more than 22 by July 1, 1994; have high academic standing; demonstrate leadership potential through extracurricular or community activities; and SAT scores above 550 on the verbal portion and 600 on the math portion.

Aug. 13 is deadline for school bus sign-up

The Howard County school system is reminding parents that all kindergartners needing bus transportation must be registered at their home schools by Aug. 13. Bus service for the first two weeks of school will not be guaranteed for students registered after that date.

Children must be 5 years old on or before Dec. 31 to be eligible to enter kindergarten for the 1993-1994 school year.

Before entering school in Maryland, students are also required to have primary immunization against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, poliomyelitis, measles (rubeola) and German measles (rubella).

Parents can enroll their children for kindergarten from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday at the school that serves their community. Parents are asked to bring the child's birth certificate and immunization record.

Board of Education needs citizen advisers

The Citizen Advisory Committee to the Howard County Board of Education is seeking county residents interested in serving as at-large members for the 1993-1994 school year.

Mandated by state law, the committee provides a channel for community input to the school board.

Elected for a two-year term, at-large members serve on subcommittees which deal with education-related topics.

Those interested are asked to send their name, address and a short statement explaining their interest in education to The Advisory Committee to the Board of Education, c/o Public Information Office, The Howard County Public School System, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City, Md. 21042.

Cultural program seeks host families

Loisirs Culturels a l'Etranger, a nonprofit French organization that places French teen-agers with American families, has an urgent need for families who are willing to be hosts to students for four weeks.

Students have their own insurance program and bring their own spending money.
