WILBUR "PETE" LANIER

Mr. Lanier, a resident of Linthicum for 25 years, has been a volunteer with the Maryland State Police for the past two years.

A retired sales representative from CSX Corp., Mr. Lanier orders and organizes supplies for the Glen Burnie and Waterloo barracks as well as for the state police offices at Baltimore-Washington International Airport. Mr. Lanier helps maintain a running inventory of everything from the shirts and pants troopers wear to their tie clips. The exception: "guns and ammunition," Mr. Lanier says.

When he began volunteering, he worked at the BWI offices, assisting with fingerprinting and processing identifications for airport employees.

Last year, he was recognized for having donated more than 500 hours. This year, he is on track to surpass that mark.

"I feel I'm doing what I can to free up officers who would have to do this. If we can help out and get a patrolman back on the road, then I'll do what I can. It's interesting, working with the state police, and they treat us very well," he says.

Although the hours are flexible, he sometimes works six days a week, dividing his time between the facilities.

Mr. Lanier has long been a volunteer in the community. He is a former president of the Belle Grove Elementary PTA, a Scout master, a member of the Masons, and a football and basketball coach with the Anne Arundel Optimists.
