WHAT THESE CHARTS MEAN
These numbers indicate what percentage of third-, fifth- and eighth-grade students scored at each of five levels of the Maryland School Performance Assessment administered in May 1992. The tests are designed to show students' proficiency in four skill areas: reading, math, science and social studies. Level 1 marks the highest level of achievement, Level 5 the lowest. The State Board of Education considers Level 3 satisfactory, and by 1996, wants at least 70 percent of Maryland students to score at that level. Scores marked with an * are for Levels 4 and 5 combined.
