Grand jury indicts driver in collision that killed woman, 76

A county grand jury yesterday indicted Alfredo R. Martinez, 47, of the 8200 block of Quill Point Drive in Bowie, for homicide by auto for his role in the May 27 crash in Gambrills that killed a 76-year-old Crofton woman.

Police said Mr. Martinez was driving a 1984 Datsun 200SX east on Defense Highway near Hallmark Drive when he crossed the double yellow line and struck the rear of a westbound car.

His car continued in the opposite lane and crashed head-on into a 1988 Dodge Aries driven by Dorothy C. Uhl, of the 1700 block of Aberdeen Circle.

She was flown by a State Police MedEvac helicopter to Prince George's General Hospital in Cheverly and died there about 10 p.m., about five hours after the accident, police said.

State's Attorney Frank Weathersbee said Mr. Martinez, who registered a .13 blood alcohol level after the accident, also was indicted for auto manslaughter and homicide while intoxicated.
