Baseball

Over 575 ballplayers from 43 teams braved the heat and humidity to compete in this year's Harford County Countywide Baseball Tournament.

The games were played in various sights around the county and ended last Saturday with three undefeated champions crowned in the 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14 age groups.

the 9-10 division, Bel Air A beat Fallston Grey, 8-3, for the championship at William S. James Elementary School.

A two-run homer in the fifth inning put Bel Air A up 7-3 and they scored another for the win.

Jeremy Ziegler went the distance on the mound for Fallston.

In the 11-12 division, Fallston Blue defeated Forest Hill A, 10-0.

A six-run third inning and a combined two-hit performance from pitchers Brett Holthaus and Chris DeJarnette led Fallston to victory.

Holthaus also nailed a three-run homer and the other players hammered timely singles for the shutout win.

Championship team members: John Caslin, Greg Davis, Chris DeJarnette, A.J. Ellis, Brett Holthaus, J.J. Jones, Chris Kavanagh, Brian Mayfield, Chris Porter, Steve Rothgeb and

Kevin Smith.

In the 13-14 division, Bel Air A defeated Emmorton Black, 13-11.

Emmorton, a first-round loser to Aberdeen, won five games in the losers bracket to advance to the finals.

Soccer

The under-10 Bel Air girls soccer team recently won its division in the Baltimore Beltway League. The team, in its first year of play, outscored its opponents, 21-2, and posted five shutouts with strong defense. Katie Campbell is the team's starting goalkeeper.

In matches out of the state, the team was competitive against mid-Atlantic rivals, placing third in both the Hampden and Pennsylvania Invitational Girls Soccer Tournaments.

Team members include Angela Munro, Monica Janowitz, Janice Hanfman, Sara McNew, Ashley Mitchell, Kristin Ivy, Lauren Moore, Jennie Weber, Andrea Waldron, Keri Kinnear, Jennifer Shannon, Lindsey Kelly, Shannon Bumpus, Katie Campbell, and Alison Snyder.

Swimming

The Emmorton Barracudas scored three recent victories to remain undefeated in the Harford County Swim League.

Last week, the team defeated Belcamp, 199-50, in a meet shortened by rain.

Barracuda swimmers won six of eight in 100-yard individual medley events to jump out to an early 39-20 lead.

On Saturday, three Emmorton team records were broken as the Barracudas defeated Fountain Green, 310-166.

Ben Garback's 18.65 seconds in the boys 8-under 25-yard butterfly is a new Barracuda record.

Also with team records were Ashley Lorenz with a 17.10 in the girls 9-10 25-fly and Amy Landis with a 34.28 in the girls 15-18 50-back.

The Barracudas also won six of eight in opening IM events against Fountain Green, and closed out the meet by winning five of seven relay events.

On Wednesday, the Barracudas beat Harford County YMCA, 340-135.

Tina Woodward won three events for Emmorton. She finished the opening 9-10 girls 100 IM in 1:34.14 for a gold medal. She also won the 25 back (19.88) and the 25 fly (21.12). In the 11-12 girls division, Meredith Eyler won the 50 free in 33.15. She also finished first in the 50 breast (44.22) and the 50 fly (38.58).
