BEVERLY KUETHE of Glen Burnie

Volunteer's background: Mrs. Kuethe, a lifelong Glen Burnie resident and mother of four, has been a volunteer at North Arundel Hospital since joining its auxiliary in 1969.

From 1978 to 1979, Mrs. Kuethe was president of the auxiliary. She has served on the board of directors since 1988, as well as on various board committees.

Over the years, Mrs. Kuethe has accumulated over 21,000 hours service at the hospital.

That's the equivalent of 10 1/2 years of full-time employment, said James R. Walker, the hospital's president and chief executive officer.

In addition to her work at the hospital, Mrs. Kuethe has been an active volunteer at Richard Henry Lee Elementary School and St. Albans Episcopal Church.

For volunteers to receive awards recognizing their service is not unusual, but to have an award named after you as a result of outstanding service is.

At a June 7 banquet, the first Beverly R. Kuethe Volunteer Award was presented to Diana Drasher, a nursing assistant at the hospital who started NAH's speaker's bureau in 1987.

Until June, Mrs. Kuethe had been a buyer for the gift shop for 14 years. During that period, gift shop proceeds netted over $500,000 for the hospital's building fund.

Organization's comments: "Beverly has done a fantastic job as our gift shop buyer," Mr. Walker said.

Since leaving the gift shop, Mrs. Kuethe has volunteered in the endoscopy department, performing a variety of duties.

Volunteer's comments: "There are many areas in the hospital where volunteers fill in, and I wanted to try something new."
