Simulcasts force Pimlico to open 2 days early, Aug. 3

July 23, 1993|By Ross Peddicord

To facilitate Wednesday simulcasts, Pimlico Race Course will open Aug. 3, a Tuesday.

The track originally was set to open Aug. 5. But that meant moving day for office and pari-mutuel equipment from Laurel Race Course to Pimlico would have fallen on a Wednesday, formerly a dark day. Starting two weeks ago, Wednesday is now used to take 37 races simulcast from out-of-state tracks at Maryland's six thoroughbred wagering outlets.

Under the new format, Laurel will close Aug. 1. Moving will take place the next day.

A total of $539,927 was bet this week on the Wednesday simulcasts, a $13,845 increase from the first all-simulcast program initiated the previous week.
