Ross Perot supporters are organizing in Carroll, hoping to elect candidates who support their views on money matters in 1994 elections.

An organizational meeting for a Carroll County chapter of United We Stand America is scheduled at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 467 at 519 Poole Road in Westminster.

Leader Richard F. Will Sr. of Melrose said he expects about 200 people to attend.

United We Stand America is a grass-roots group formed by Perot supporters during the 1992 presidential election.

The group has about 600 members in Carroll and 20,000 statewide, said Mr. Will, a Democrat who ran for county commissioner in 1990.

Joan Vinson, Maryland director for United We Stand in Annapolis, and Pat and Sam Powell of Hagerstown, interim directors for the group in Maryland's 6th Congressional District, will speak Saturday. Carroll is in the 6th District.

The nonpartisan group is trying to organize in each of the state's congressional districts, Ms. Vinson said. One of its goals is "to elect to Congress candidates that commit themselves to fiscal responsibility and reform in government," she said.

The group also focuses on improving the economy, creating jobs and reforming campaign finance practices, Ms. Vinson said.

"We are certainly focused on the deficit and debt," she said.

"We are aiming to hold our elected officials responsible. We will be a united group.

"We are very serious about what we're doing, so watch what we do," she added.

"We'd like to have an influence on national legislation. We're keeping score for '94," Ms. Vinson said.

United We Stand plans to sponsor candidate forums to educate voters about candidates' views on fiscal issues, she said. The group wants to be involved in national, state and county elections.

Mr. Powell said United We Stand members have sustained their interest in improving the economy since the '92 election. Organizational meetings are being scheduled around the country, he said.

United We Stand representatives from each congressional district will be elected in October, he said.

"We're staying active," Mr. Powell said.

Mr. Will said he and other Perot supporters mailed notices about Saturday's meeting to United We Stand members, and he has made about 40 phone calls to encourage people to attend.

Finksburg resident Evelyn Zagami also has been making calls.

"We've had a good response. Anyone is invited," she said.
