Adult care center opens

The newly opened Laurel Adult Day Care Center, operated by Baptist Senior Adult Ministries under a contract with the Prince George's County Department of Aging, is holding an open house from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow.

The center can accommodate 30 seniors 55 and over whose disabilities or medical needs don't require 24-hour nursing care. Nine seniors are currently enrolled in the day care center, according to Joan Lyons, the acting director.

A registered nurse and recreational therapist work full time at the Laurel center, and a social worker is shared with three other Washington-area centers run by the Baptist group.

The center is in a small, wheelchair-accessible building behind the Phelps Senior Center. It has a kitchen, dining area, shower, quiet room, and arts and crafts section.

A sliding-fee scale and transportation are offered for those who need them.

Information: (301) 725-1172.
