Shackled youths bolt, one falls; all caught

Three teen-agers being led away from Juvenile Court tried to escape from custody Monday afternoon, but were thwarted when one of the youths fell, dragging the others, who were shackled together, down with him.

The county sheriff's office said yesterday that the two 16-year-olds and one 17-year-old ran away from transportation Officers Roy C. Younger and Angelia M. Williams, who were loading six youngsters onto a van outside the Department of Juvenile Services on Franklin Street in Annapolis.

The incident occurred about 5 p.m. Police said the three youths ran up Franklin Street toward Church Circle, where one of the youths tripped and fell, bringing down the other two.

The transportation officers caught up to the three and tried to detain them, but the youths resisted, the sheriff's office said. Both officers received minor injuries before deputies arrived and restrained the youths.

The teen-agers have been charged with attempted escape and assault and battery.
