4 shot in fight between families in East Baltimore BALTIMORE CITY

July 21, 1993|By Staff Report

Four people -- at least three of whom were children -- were shot when a man opened fire with a handgun last night on an East Baltimore street corner after a fight between two families grew out of control, city police said.

The victims were shot about 10:35 p.m. at the corner of Chase Street and Patterson Park Avenue.

The gunman ran off after the shooting and still was being sought early this morning, police reported.

Sandra Brown, 26, who lives in the area, said she and about a dozen others were involved in a fight in the street resulting from a domestic quarrel earlier in the evening.

Moments after people threw punches and swung sticks and a baseball bat, a man pulled out a handgun and fired about 10 shots, Ms. Brown said.

zTC "He just started shooting out of the clear blue," she said. "I think it was totally unnecessary."

Ms. Brown said a bullet hit her niece, Ashley Ward, 9, in the back near her shoulder blade, and she was transported to Johns Hopkins Hospital.

The names and ages of the other victims were not available last night, although police said none of the injuries appeared life-threatening.
