Smucker Co. gets bottling plant back on line

Knudsen & Sons, a subsidiary of the J. M. Smucker Co., whic produces carbonated and noncarbonated fruit drinks, is bottling cases a week at its plant in Havre de Grace.

The 68,000-square-foot plant, which was owned by the Chesapeake Beverage Corp. until it was sold at bankruptcy to Smucker in January, has been operating since April.

"It took a little longer than expected for us to get on line because we had to replace a considerable amount of machinery," said Dennis Armstrong, logistics manager for Knudsen.

"About 80 percent of the conveyor had to be replaced, and much of the other equipment needed extensive work because the previous owners did very little in [the] way of preventive maintenance."

One line, filling 12-ounce bottles and 10-ounce cans, is being operated on one shift. Two additional containers will be added to the line before the end of the year.

The plant, which employs 20 workers, will continue to use only one line for at least two years, according to Mr. Armstrong.

The bottling operation covers about 38,000 square feet. A distribution center, which is expected to open in September, will occupy the remaining space.

Smucker paid $2.5 million for the plant, located at 340 Old Bay Lane. It was sold Oct. 30 by a bankruptcy court appointed trustee. Some 110 people were working at the plant at that time.

Although an official announcement has not yet been made, look for Michelin Corp. to move into the now-vacant 252,000-square-foot former Pier One Imports building in the Riverside Business Center in Belcamp.

The Sun has learned that the French tire maker will take occupancy next month.

Michelin had until July 2 to notify its current landlord whether it would retain its warehouse operation at Meadowridge Business Center in Howard County.

The operation there employs 15 people. The broker for the building, Matt Ryan of Casey & Associates, declined to say whether the notice arrived.

James Fielder, director of economic development for Harford County, says he has not received official notification of the proposed move from Michelin.

A spokeswoman for Michelin says the company will make an announcement soon.

Frederick O. Mitchell, board chairman of the Upper Chesapeake Health System, has been elected chairman of the Maryland Hospital Association Board of Trustees.

Mr. Mitchell, a Perryman resident, has served as MHA vice chair for the past three years.

He also served as as secretary to the board, councilor-at-large on the association's Executive Council and as a member of MHA's Task Force on Health Care Reform.

Upper Chesapeake Health System is the parent organization for both Fallston General and Harford Memorial hospitals.

Mr. Mitchell is managing partner of F. O. Mitchell Brothers, a farming and food processing company in Perryman.

The Clorox Co., which has been operating a plant in Perryman since January, presented a $10,000 grant to the Harford County Boys and Girls Club for the purchase of 10 personal computers and software.

Plant Manager James Berger presented the check to Antonio Coffield Sr., club executive director.

In 1992, the foundation awarded a similar grant to the Harford County Public Schools.

The county has removed the overhang on the vacant building at Main Street and Churchville Road. The administration plans to use the facility for storage.

Larry Klimovitz, director of administration for the county, said a portion of the roof was being replaced and that the interior and exterior will be cleaned.

The building, last used by the Carey Tire Co., was bought by the county for $466,500 from James F. Knott, a Towson-based

developer. It is situated on a half-acre site.

The town of Bel Air is reviewing applications to fill a vacancy on the Commercial Development Commission created by the resignation of longtime member James Hamilton.

Mr. Hamilton, owner of the Bel Air Bakery, has served on the nine-member commission for nine years.

Comcast Cablevision presented $4,530 to the Maryland Food Bank. The money was raised by the company's 1993 Installation Revenue program.

The check was presented to William Ewing, director of the Maryland Food Bank.

Comcast also donated $1,690 to the Harford County Board of Education. The money, raised through the company's Cable in the Classroom campaign, will be used to buy videocassette recorders and television sets.

Marge Eikenberg was named 1993 Realtor of the Year by the Harford County Association of Realtors.

A sales associate since 1978, Mrs. Eikenberg was recipient of the association's Distinguished Sales Associate award last year.

She is currently a member of a Prudential Preferred Properties office in Harford County and is president-elect of the Central Maryland Multiple Listing Service.
