Man charged in robbery linked to recent thefts

A 30-year-old man who was arrested yesterday morning in connection with the robbery of a South County convenience store is a suspect in three other robberies in Prince George's County, police said yesterday.

Norman L. McLeon Jr., of the 4300 block of Darco Road in Upper Marlboro, was charged with theft and robbery.

County police said a man walked into a Dash-Inn convenience store in Wayson's Corner about 7 a.m., approached a 26-year-old clerk and demanded money.

"He wanted the clerk 'to be quick about it and be quiet,' " police said in a statement.

After getting an undisclosed amount of money, police said, the man drove off in a gray Oldsmobile into Prince George's County.

The clerk wrote down the license plate number and called the police, who went to the address where the automobile was registered and arrested the man.

Bank vault withstands attempted robbery

A would-be robber of a Glen Burnie bank over the weekend made it all the way to the vault, but gave up when the metal ceiling couldn't be cracked, county police said.

The burglar broke into the North Arundel Savings Bank, in the 100 block of Mountain Road, sometime between 6:30 p.m. on Friday and 9:30 a.m. yesterday.

Police said the culprit climbed up a tree and got into an attic by cutting a wooden vent that covered an opening, and then crawled over the top of the bank's ceiling by removing tiles until the vault was visible.

Authorities said the burglar left after failing to get into the vault. No items or money were reported stolen, and police said no alarms went off.
