California Angels -- Placed C John Orton on the 15-day DL. Recalled IF Jim Walewander from Triple-A Vancouver. Transferred P Julio Valera from the 15- to the 60-day DL.

Cincinnati Reds -- Placed OF Kevin Mitchell on the 15-day DL with an injury to his right hamstring. Announced that Mitchell will be suspended for two games, effective upon his return from the DL.

Cleveland Indians -- Signed P Daron Kirkreit and assigned him to Single-A Watertown.

Oakland Athletics -- Promoted Billy Beane to assistant general manager and Pam Pitts to director of baseball administration.

San Diego Padres -- Signed P Rudy Seanez to a contract with Triple-A Las Vegas.
