Babbitt to attend ceremony for youth corps

Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt will be at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center this afternoon to welcome a new group of youth corps members who will work to spruce up the outdoor education center.

Also participating in the 12:45 p.m. ceremony will be original youth corps members from the 1930s.

The ceremony is to demonstrate the "power and potential of youth corps" and is part of the eighth annual conference of the National Association of Service and Conservation Corps, being held in Baltimore.

The youths will start their day at 8 a.m. They will build an outdoor educational facility, disability-accessible floating docks and a wildlife habitat, and perform maintenance.

Officials estimate that 30 youth corps participants from the 1930s and 1940s will be at the ceremony, along with more than 400 people representing the youth corps from around the country.

The Patuxent Wildlife Research Center is a federal preserve that spans Anne Arundel and Prince George's County between the

Goddard Space Center and Fort Meade. The government donated 8,100 acres to the center two years ago.
