Youth shot in foot while trying to stop fight in Oakland Mills

A 15-year-old Columbia youth was shot in the foot early Saturday morning when he tried to break up a fight between two strangers in Oakland Mills, Howard County police said.

An acquaintance of the victim took him to Howard County General Hospital for treatment of the wound, which police said was not serious. He was later released.

The youth was injured about 2 a.m. Saturday while returning from a party at the Autumn Crest Apartments on Stevens Forest Road. Police said that when he noticed two strangers fighting at the entrance to a footbridge near Route 29, he approached them to try to break it up.

Although several other people were watching the fight, the youth was the only one who tried to stop it, police said. While doing so, he said, he was shot in the left foot.
