Annual carnival in Winfield to start today SOUTHWEST-- Mount Airy * Woodbine * Winfield

The Winfield Community Volunteer Fire Department will hold its 29th annual carnival today through Saturday at the carnival grounds on Route 26 between Route 97 and Woodbine Road. Games, food, bingo and rides will be featured.

Platters will be served every night from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the air-conditioned hall. Ride nights are set for today, tomorrow and Wednesday. Discount coupons are available before ride nights at the firehouse.

The firefighters' parade will begin at 7 p.m. tomorrow. Each evening will feature a different music group.

FIRE

* Mount Airy: Mount Airy responded to a vehicle fire on Interstate 70 at 11:26 a.m. Saturday. They were out for 17 minutes.

Engines from Mount Airy, Westminster, Lisbon, New Market and Damascus were dispatched for a call of smoke in an apartment on North Main Street in Mount Airy at 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Units were able to return to service in 21 minutes.

* Woodbine: Units from Winfield, Mount Airy and Lisbon of Howard County were called to a shed fire on Woodbine Road at 2:43 p.m. Saturday. Units were out for 70 minutes.
