State gives $2.85 million to arts groups

The Maryland State Arts Council recently awarded a total of $2.85 million to Maryland's seven statewide arts organizations: the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Museum of Art, Center Stage, the Walters Art Gallery, the Baltimore Opera Company, Olney Theatre and the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art.

The state's small and mid-sized arts organizations received $1.48 million in grants while the council awarded $847,488 to county arts councils. Overall, the state gave $5.2 million in arts grants for fiscal year 1994 -- a 37 percent increase over the previous year.

The following groups in Baltimore City received a total of $423,428:

The Actors Company Theatre will hold auditions for its September production of "The Fantasticks" at 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Michael's Eighth Avenue, 7220 Grayburn Drive in Glen Burnie. Actors should prepare to sing a song from the show. Roles include a woman age 16 to 20; three men over the age of 40, one man age 18 to 22, one man age 25 to 35 and a mime. The Musical Theatre Machine will hold auditions for Stephen Sondheim's musical "Sweeney Todd" from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the Spotlighters Theatre, 817 St. Paul St. Actors should prepare a song from the show. For details, call (410) 825-2554.

Eva Anderson's Baltimore Dance Theatre will hold open auditions at 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays during July and August at 1014 Morton St. in Baltimore. The auditions are given in the form of a class. For details, call (410) 997-3899.

Auditions for ensemble dancers for a fall production of "West Side Story" are scheduled at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at F. Scott Black's Towson Dinner Theatre, 100 E. Chesapeake Ave. Dancers must also sing. For details, call (410) 321-6595.

Theatre Hopkins will hold its annual open auditions for actors and technical staff at 1 p.m. Saturday and 7 p.m. next Sunday at the Merrick Barn on the Homewood campus of Johns Hopkins University. Actors should take a resume and photo as well as a prepared monologue. Those interested in technical and backstage work may take a resume. All actors over age 16 are invited to audition. Howard Community College's new resident professional theater company will hold auditions from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. July 19 and from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. July 20 at Smith Theatre at Howard Community College, Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia. The productions are "Marvin's Room" by Scott McPherson, Moliere's "Tartuffe" and Lanford Wilson's "Burn This." Arena Players will hold auditions for an original musical, "Ella's Place," at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday and at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Playhouse, 801 McCulloh St. Actors, singers and dancers are needed from the ages of 18-65.
