Andrea Kraus recovered from a string of bogeys to par her last five holes for 39-3877 and won the annual Greiner Cup by two strokes at hot and humid Caves Valley Golf Club yesterday.

The tournament, sponsored and conducted by the Women's Golf Association, is limited to players who have won a gross championship.

Sharon Pusin and Bonnie Fry, each with a double-bogey on her card, tied for second with 79s, followed by Kathy Altemus and Cindy Peterka at 81.

Kraus, reigning Metropolitan champion from Woodholme CC, had three bogeys on each nine of the 5,173-yard course, with five of them coming in a six-hole stretch in the middle of the round.

Peterka started at No. 10, and putting woes contributed to four double-bogeys and a 43, before she got back on her game with three birdies -- the most of any in the 26-player field -- and a 38.

USGA Junior qualifying

Paul Van Zutphen of Gaithersburg birdied the first two holes in his morning round and went on to post 71-76147 and earn the medal at the Green Spring Valley Hunt Club.

With two places available for the 20 starters, Steven Shrawder, of Millersburg, Pa., gained the other spot with 75-74149. The championship will be held July 27-31 in Portland, Ore.

Despite not having seen the course before, Van Zutphen, 14, who should be one of the youngest players in the championship field, hit a 4-iron shot to 25 feet at the first hole and an 8-iron shot to 10 feet at the second to set up the birdies.

Shrawder, 17, a high school senior making his first try in this event, had a practice round and said it helped in fashioning two solid rounds without any big mistakes.

Each is a veteran of tournament play. Van Zutphen led the 13-14 age group in recent qualifying for the Optimist Junior World (his score tied the top qualifier in the older group), and he won the 13-14 title in last year's Bobby Bowers tournament. Shrawder, an Optimist World qualifier last year, placed 11th in the recent North-South Junior.

Qualifiers: Paul Van Zutphen 71-76147; Steven Strawde 75-74149.

Other scorers included: Miguel Rivera 76-78154; Dan Falls 80-75155; Joe Chuasiriporn 81-75156; Jonathan Steckler 79-83162; Jon Levinson 82-83165; Brendan McKinney 87-78165; Wes Lovell 80-88168; Ben Manga 79-89168.
