Barnett, Runco win spring titles

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -- Jockey Wayne Barnett and trainer Jeff C. Runco captured the riding and training titles during Charles Town Races' spring meet, which ended June 30.

Barnett, a 27-year-old Wayne, Mich., native, booted home 85 winners, 71 seconds and 47 thirds from 379 mounts for a winning percentage of .220 and an in-the-money percentage of .600. The spring riding title was Barnett's fourth straight meet title at the three-quarter-mile track.

Chris Martin was second in the standings with 49 wins, followed by Larry Dupuy with 46.

Runco garnered his 11th straight meet title and 14th meet title overall, saddling 47 winners, 31 seconds and 25 thirds from 157 starts for a winning percentage of .300 and an in-the-money percentage of .660. Mark McCracken sent out 24 winners during the meet to finish second, and William Sams and Henry Mercer made 11 trips each to the winner's circle to share third-place honors.

Attendance for the meet, which began April 2, was 134,949, down 22.8 percent from Charles Town's 1992 spring meet attendance of 174,706. Pari-mutuel handle during the meet totaled $15,510,484, off 30.7 percent from the $22,388,311 wagered a year ago.
