For the third consecutive year, the Johns Hopkins Hospital has been rated the nation's best hospital in U.S. News & World Report's annual survey of American hospitals.

But this year, the news magazine used what it said was a more sophisticated method to measure excellence, taking into account death rates, technology, nurse-to-bed ratios and other "objective" criteria along with an opinion survey of 2,400 physicians.

Previously, a hospital's ranking was based solely on the reputation it enjoyed among physicians. The survey, appearing in this week's edition, is the fourth published by the weekly news magazine. In the first year, Hopkins ranked second.

"We were really thrilled to be selected three years in a row, and we're delighted we are continuing to hold that position this year when they've made the survey more sophisticated," said Dr. James A. Block, president of the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System.

"It tends to reinforce the belief that students and residents and patients already have that this is a great institution."

The survey was conducted by a private polling firm, the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago.

Hospitals first were ranked in 16 specialties. Then, the overall ranking was determined by counting the number of times a hospital gained a top-10 ranking in the specialties.

Johns Hopkins made the cut in 15 specialties, compared with 13 for the Mayo Clinic, 12 for UCLA and 11 for Massachusetts General.

Hopkins was rated the best hospital in two areas, ophthalmology and urology.

The Mayo Clinic received the top ranking in five specialties, the most gained by an institution. The number of times a hospital rated "best" in particular specialties was not considered in the overall rating.
