A 17-year-old Severn male was charged as a juvenile yesterday with robbing a Crofton supermarket. The teen-ager was charged with robbery, theft over $300, theft of a registration plate and assault and battery.
Police were called about 11 a.m. to the Basics Food Store in the 1600 block of Crofton Center. Employees told them a teen-ager had walked up to a register to make a purchase, but, as the clerk opened the cash drawer, the youth grabbed the money tray and struck the clerk.
He ran from the store and was seen driving off in a late model gray Pontiac Grand Am with a Maryland license plate, police said.
Detectives said the car matched the description of a vehicle stolen in Severn on June 19. They said the license plate on the car was stolen from a vehicle in Glen Burnie yesterday morning.
Shortly after the robbery, a Southern District police officer saw the car in the Robinwood community, in Annapolis.
Police said the driver bailed out of the car when he saw the officer approach, but he was arrested in a home nearby after a brief foot chase.
