Fun for Fourth: fireworks, food, fishing, fifties and even Elvis

Activities sponsored by the Laurel Fourth of July Committee and Fort Meade highlight the many Independence Day activities in the Laurel area.

Fort Meade invites the public to celebrate the Fourth at Burba Park beginning at 12:30 p.m. Sunday with vendors, live entertainment, a concert by the U.S. Army Band at 7 p.m. and fireworks.

Fourth of July activities in Laurel will be held on Saturday, beginning with a parade at 11 a.m. and fireworks at dusk.

Other activities include performances by an Elvis impersonator, a bed race, a watermelon-eating contest, sack races, games and refreshments, a fishing contest, a baby crawl, hula hoop contest, paddle boat race, a best '50s dresser contest and a horseshoe tournament at Granville Gude Park by Laurel Lake.

* Jessup: 7400 block of Assateague Drive: A trucker was walking to his Truckers Inn hotel room at 10:20 p.m. Tuesday when a man approached, put a gun to his neck and demanded money. An undisclosed amount of cash was taken.

* North Laurel: 9100 block of Tumbleweed Run: A burglar pried open a storage area door and stole a video cassette recorder between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday.
