Chicago White Sox -- Activated P Kirk McCaskill from the 15-day DL. Placed P Terry Leach on the 15-day DL, retroactive to last Thursday.

Cincinnati Reds -- Traded IF Gary Scott to the Minnesota Twins for P Alan Newman and IF Tom Houk. Assigned Newman to Triple-A Indianapolis and Houk to Double-A Chattanooga. Promoted 3B Keith Kessinger from Double-A Chattanooga to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Florida Marlins -- Agreed to terms with P Thomas Howard and assigned him to a Rookie League Gulf Coast League team.

St. Louis Cardinals -- Recalled P Lee Guetterman from Triple-A Louisville. Sent P Tom Urbani to Louisville.

San Francisco Giants -- Sold the contract of minor-league OF Mickey Brantley to the Yomiuri Giants of the Japanese Central League. Brantley, 32, was hitting .364 in Triple-A.

Texas Rangers -- Activated P Brian Bohanon from the 15-day DL. Optioned P Jeff Bronkey to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Midwest League -- Suspended Fort Wayne Wizards manager Jim Dwyer, a former Oriole, for five games and fined him an undisclosed amount for bumping an umpire, using abusive language and delaying the game Saturday.

Basketball

Atlanta Hawks -- Exercised the option on the contract of G-F Duane Ferrell (Calvert Hall). Did not offer a contract to G Travis Mays, allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent.

Boston Celtics -- Reached an agreement with F Dino Radja of Croatia, their second-round draft pick four years ago who has been playing in Europe.

Dallas Mavericks -- Traded C Eric Riley, their second-round pick in the 1993 draft, to the Houston Rockets for the rights to F Popeye Jones, a 1992 second-round pick.

Golden State Warriors -- Acquired F Chris Webber, the first pick in the draft, from the Orlando Magic for G Anfernee Hardaway, the third pick in the draft, and first-round picks in 1996, 1998 and 2000. New Jersey Nets -- Acquired the 36th choice overall in the draft from the Washington Bullets for future considerations.

Orlando Magic -- Named Matt Guokas VP of basketball development, and Brian Hill coach.

Utah Jazz -- Traded F-C Mike Brown to the Minnesota Timberwolves for C Felton Spencer.

Washington Bullets -- Renounced the rights to C Charles Jones and G Andre Turner.

Miami Tropics (USBL) -- Activated G Duane Washington (Washington Bullets' second-round draft choice in 1987) from the taxi squad.

USA Basketball -- Named following to the roster for the USA Men's World University Games team: Donald Williams, North Carolina; Travis Ford, Kentucky; Richard Scott, Kansas; Michael Finley, Wisconsin; Antonio Lang, Duke; Ed O'Bannon, UCLA; Eric Platkowski, Nebraska; Shawn Respert, Michigan State; Carlos Rogers, Tennessee State; Damon Stoudamire, Arizona; Jeff Webster, Oklahoma; and Sharone Wright, Clemson. Named Junior Burrough of Virginia and Lawrence Moten of Syracuse as alternates.
