UMBC team names hero

Chris Gibeau, son of Joe and Gerrie Gibeau of Hammond Village in North Laurel, has been named "Unsung Hero" of the Men's Swim Team at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

A four-year member of the team, Mr. Gibeau swam the 200-meter backstroke and relays. This year Mr. Gibeau was reunited with his younger brother Mike who set school records of 49.97 in the 100-yard butterfly and 1:52.26 in the 200-yard butterfly.

The brothers first swam together as members of the Hammond Park Stingrays in the Central Maryland Swim League. They spent five years swimming with the Columbia Corsairs before joining the original Retriever Aquatic Club started by UMBC swim coach Sid Burkot in 1986.

Both attended Hammond High School.
