Lt. Gwilliam takes part in Team Spirit-93 drill

Navy Lt. David J. Gwilliam, whose wife, Patricia, is the daughter of David B. and Kathy M. Blanchard of Woodbine, recently participated in the 10-day combined military exercise "Team Spirit-93" in South Korea.

Lt. Gwilliam is aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill, deployed in Yokosuka, Japan.

He joined almost 100,000 people from all branches of the U.S. military and the Republic of Korea. Fourteen U.S. and 29 South Korean ships took part in the exercise. The Team Spirit land, sea and air training exercises have been held since 1976 to improve the defensive readiness of the Republic of Korea. The large-scale operations tested the two nations' ability to work together as they deployed large numbers of troops, equipment, and supplies in and around South Korea.

An amphibious landing involved surface ships from both countries and more than 9,500 U.S. Marines.

Lt. Gwilliam is an 1979 graduate of George J. Penney High School of East Hartford, Conn., a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, and a graduate of Trinity College.
