Fire officials probe blaze that destroyed house

Fire investigators were trying to determine the cause yesterday of a two-alarm fire that destroyed a house in the 200 block of Newberry Road in Berrywood Sunday night.

The blaze, which apparently began in the garage and raged out of control for nearly an hour, caused more than $300,000 in damage to the house.

Lt. Robert Kornmann, a spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, said Harry Adelman Jr. and his wife, Linda, were at home when the fire broke out around 8:30 p.m., but escaped unharmed.

Minutes after the first alarm, most of the house became engulfed in flames when the gas tank of a car parked in the attached garage exploded.

A second alarm was sounded at 8:41 p.m., bringing at least a dozen pieces of fire equipment and 40 firefighters from several stations to the scene.

Lieutenant Kornmann said the fire was declared under control at 9:20 p.m.
