Segui, comeback kids even too much for Wickman Saturday's Orioles game

It wasn't as dramatic as the other two, but the Orioles made their third significant comeback of this homestand to beat the New York Yankees, 12-10, Saturday night.

David Segui's double drove in three runs to highlight a four-run fifth inning, as the Orioles wiped out a 6-3 deficit and handed Yankees right-hander Bob Wickman (8-1) his first loss of the year.

In earlier comebacks last week, the Orioles twice overcame six-run deficits -- 7-1 against the Detroit Tigers Tuesday night and 6-0 against the Yankees on Friday night. They didn't have as far to rebound Saturday night, but that didn't lessen the significance of the accomplishment.

"We knew coming out of spring training that we could score runs," said manager Johnny Oates. "We are finally getting around to doing it."

The win was the sixth straight for the Orioles and their 11th in a row at home -- a record for Camden Yards and one short of the club's all-time mark (July 16 to Aug. 10, 1969). The victory also gave the Orioles their eighth straight series win, matching a club record set in 1966 and matched in 1979.

Segui, who drove in four runs while going 3-for-4, had a lot of offensive help Saturday night. Chris Hoiles had his sixth straight multi-hit game, going 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs.

"The fact that I'm hitting homers doesn't surprise me," said Hoiles, "but they have never come in bunches like this before."

The game Saturday night marked the 23rd time this year that the Orioles had won by coming from behind. It also featured the first major-league home run for Jeffrey Hammonds, who had debuted the night before with a pair of singles.

Mark Williamson (4-1), who pitched 3 1/3 innings in relief of starter Jamie Moyer, got credit for the win.
