Freedom fifth-graders receive awards SOUTHEAST -- Sykesville * Eldersburg * Gamber

Freedom Elementary School fifth-graders were honored at an award and promotion ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

The fifth-grade instrumental students performed, and awards were presented. The children gave their teachers certificates of appreciation.

Student leader gets award from college

Paul Meyers, outgoing Carroll Community College Student Government Organization president, has received the "Friends of the College" pin.

In addition to his responsibilities as president, he has acted as liaison between the student government and the advisory board.

Mr. Meyers, a 1993 graduate of Carroll, plans to attend Western

Maryland College or Green Mountain College in Vermont, where he received a $2,000 merit scholarship award.

He lives in Sykesville with his mother and stepfather, Mary and Glenn Rash.


* Sykesville: Units from the Sykesville, Gamber and Winfield stations took a half-hour to extinguish a house fire on Gemini Drive after being called out at 10:55 p.m. Friday.

Engines from the Sykesville and Winfield stations were called to clean up a spill on Bartholow Road at 5:35 p.m. Friday. They were out for almost 1 1/2 hours.
